In Serbia there is a display of excess and extravagance that is usually reserved for spoiled billionaires and entertainers. The Village of the Dead, or Smoljinac as the locals call it, consists of roughly 100 grave houses. They are not inhabited by the living but rather the dead. Inside there is furniture, pictures and other amenities that one might find in a house.
These structures are generally put up by ex-pats that have worked in other countries and made some money. Not necessarily wealthy people, but people who want to show off the fruits of their hard work abroad. The houses aren’t quite on the scale of the Great Pyramids, but still, quite a show of excess.
